Pius Akutah, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council, expressed concern about the serious economic problems caused by abandoned or delayed export shipments at the country’s seaports. He highlighted that these issues affect exporters, their banks, and the national economy negatively. Akutah emphasized that some exporters might have taken loans from banks at high interest rates to fund their businesses, and losing their investments could force them out of business. He also pointed out that the banks involved suffer losses, and ultimately, the entire nation’s economy bears the brunt of these setbacks. The Shippers Council leader criticized the delays in processing export cargoes at ports, especially as the government aims to diversify the country’s export activities.
