Father Mbaka Urges Tinubu to Pay Governors and Lawmakers N62,000 Minimum Wage
Father Ejike Mbaka from the Adoration Ministry in Enugu, Nigeria, proposed that governors and national assembly members should be paid the same N62,000 minimum wage suggested for workers. He expressed this view during an interview with AIT on June 8.
The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress postponed a planned nationwide strike for one week to negotiate this new minimum wage with the government on June 4.
While President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government agreed to the N62,000 minimum wage for workers, Nigerian governors opposed it, saying they couldn’t afford to pay even N60,000 as the minimum wage.
Father Mbaka responded by suggesting that governors, senators, and house of representatives members should also receive the N62,000 minimum wage. He warned that continuing to push poor Nigerians could lead to rebellion. He recounted an incident in Lagos where labor activists disrupted airport operations, hinting that similar actions could escalate if the situation is not handled properly.
Mbaka questioned why the proposed wage couldn’t be applied to all government officials if it was deemed suitable for laborers.
