National Team Hopes Drive Olamiposi’s Rising Career
In the busy streets of Ibadan, Nigeria, 13-year-old Azeez Olamiposi is on his way to becoming a football star, driven by his passion and determination.
Born on November 20, 2010, Azeez discovered his love for football early on. Growing up in Olorunsogo, Ibadan, he was inspired by watching neighborhood football games.
“I started playing football at seven. I loved watching people play in my neighborhood. Playing football made me happier than anything else, so I decided to become a footballer and approached a coach for training. I’ve never tried any other sport; it’s always been football for me,” Azeez said.
Azeez’s journey hasn’t been easy. At first, he struggled to fit in with his teammates due to his skill level. “When I started, it was tough because my teammates didn’t like how I played. I wasn’t good enough, so I decided to improve. Now, I’m much better and loved by my teammates and coaches,” he shared proudly.
Despite these challenges, Azeez’s resilience and determination have won over his coaches and peers. He’s been fortunate to have his parents’ support, although financial issues have sometimes made it difficult.
“My parents supported me at first, but my saddest moment was when they told me they couldn’t keep sponsoring me. I felt like quitting, but I believe in my dreams,” Azeez said.
Even with these setbacks, Azeez has achieved significant milestones. He has won several trophies for his team and local government, including the Ona Ara Youth League with A.A Aztec Football Academy in Moniya, Ibadan, and the Inter Local Government Cup with Olorunsogo LGA. He also won the Aiki Sarafa Ramadan Cup with his former team, Standard FC, in 2019.
Balancing school and football has been challenging, especially during his time at Treasure Model School, where he recently completed his secondary education. “Balancing school and sports was tough. Now that I’m done with secondary school, it’s easier. But before, I would come home from school, go to training, wash my uniform, sleep for two hours, and then do my homework,” he added.
Azeez is inspired by England and Manchester City star Kyle Walker, who plays the same position. “I really admire Kyle Walker’s playing style and want to win like he does,” Azeez said.
Azeez dreams of achieving great success in football, both with the national team and in Europe. “I have many goals and will be happy to achieve them. My dream is to play for my country at all levels – U-15, U-17, U-20, and senior level. I also want to achieve more in Europe,” he shared.
His coach, Olaniyi Babatunde of A.A. Aztec Football Academy, sees great potential in Azeez. “Azeez is a promising and talented player. He is very respectful and disciplined. From the first day I met him, I knew he would improve quickly, and he’s doing that now. I’m sponsoring him and acting like a father to him because of his discipline,” Coach Babatunde said.
Azeez’s story is a testament to the power of determination and passion. With his talent and dedication, he is well on his way to achieving his goals and making a mark in the world of football.
